Short description: The Old Church Park (also called Ruttopuisto, ”Plague Park”) is a public park and historical graveyard surrounding the Old Church in Helsinki.
Long description: The park was originally a cemetery and got its nickname “Plague Park” from the public due to the fact that over 1000 people were buried in mass graves in the park during the plague in 1710. The architect Engel designed the church in the graveyard and the park gate that opens to Bulevardi. The graveyard became a public park in 1829 yet the tombstones and graves remain monuments in the park today.
